Summary:
Stack testing was conducted at the MEGA Contractors, Inc. asphalt plant in Rockville, Virginia, by Entropy
Environmentalists, Inc. for KTA Environmental and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) on September 1
and September 3, 1993.  The pilot testing program was conducted to assess the air quality impact of adding crumb
rubber to hot mix asphalt (HMA).  The use of scrap tire rubber is a legislative requirement of the Intermodal Surface
Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA).  Pollutants tested included: Toxic Air Pollutants/Hazardous Air Pollutants
(Benzene, Ethyl Benzene, Toluene, Xylenes, Styrene and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons), Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs), and Particulate Matter (total and PM-10).
