Summary:
This report describes the results of a pilot project performed for Caltrans to demonstrate the capabilities of the HVS
system and underscore the potential benefit of an APT technology transfer project involving the HVS.  The logistics of
the pilot project were somewhat complex since APT test sections were built according to Caltrans designs and
specifications in South Africa for testing by the HVS at CSIR, while SHRP A-003A laboratory testing and the associated
performance predictions were being simultaneously carried out by the University of California at Berkeley in Richmond,
California.  Initial material testing and mix design work was carried out at the Caltrans laboratory in Sacramento
(TransLab).  Both Caltrans’ and UC-Berkeley’s laboratory testing were performed on paving materials shipped from
South Africa, with more than a ton of materials air-freighted during the course of the project.  The project was scheduled
for completion in six months, but actually took seven, primarily due to shipping delays.
