Summary:
The major factor contributing to the need for resurfacing is the aging/hardening of the bituminous binder.  Thus, a
general approach to better durability should be through long-term maintenance of flexibility.  Careful selection of
bituminous binder for age stability can improve durability.  Further refinement of asphalt may be a long-term possibility.
There are numerous additives, which have promise for long-term improvement of binder flexibility.
